Baseball Chatter May 19

Jose Berrios is the talk of the town after he pitched into the eighth inning last night, allowing one run off two hits and striking out 11. He threw first pitch strikes to 21 of the 27 batters he faced.

I have been watching him from the WBC, not this last one, but the one before that when he pitched when I think he was 18 I knew he was going to be good.

Last year, he obviously struggled, but he came out this year and was obviously electric. That was up there. I felt like I was grinding with him. He was making really good pitches and I felt like I was locked in. And he was having success.

It looked a lot like Jose Fernandez, to be honest with you.

Explosive, quick heater and that sweeping curveball that he can turn into a slider, too. He looked good. Sometimes you have to tip your cap and I have no shame in doing that. He pitched really well.Ian Desmond on Jose Berrios

Jace Peterson is the first player in the National League so far this season to make a start at every infield position other than catcher. He has also played left field.

Chris Sale goes for his eighth consecutive start with double digit strikeouts tonight. Pedro Martinez is the only other pitcher who has done it. Buster Olney was on ESPN radio talking about the Red Sox yesterday. Have a listen:

Yasiel Puig hit home run number eight last night along with 24 RBI and five stolen bases so far this season.

Kenley Jansen struck out all four batters he faced for his eighth save last night. He struck out the side in the ninth inning in nine pitches.

Julio Teheran:

  • Four Starts On the Road: 2-0, 0.71 ERA, 0 HRA, BAA .195
  • Four Starts at Home: 1-4, 10.50 ERA, 8 HRA, BAA .337

Ervin Santana entered yesterday having gone 12-5 with a 2.12 ERA over his last 26 starts. You need to sell him because he isn’t going to maintain these numbers. His FIP is 4.37. His strand rate is too high, his BABIP is way too low, he walks too many and strikes out few. Sell or be sorry.

Eric Sogard has his second four hit game in three games yesterday. He is hitting .476 with two home runs since he was called up last week

Adam Frazier is batting leadoff for the Pirates and is 10 for 20 in his last four games. He is hitting .347 with a .395 on base percentage. Two negatives for Fantasy owners is his lack of power and the fact that he has been caught stealing three times and successful zero times so far this season.

J.D. Martinez started his season one week ago today and is 8 for 16 with five homers, 11 RBI, 7 runs and nine walks. 14 of 16 at bats have resulted in a walk or a home run.

Javier Baez in May: 5 HR, 14 RBI, 11 Runs, 2 SB

Ian Happ has reached base 11 times in 22 plate appearances with two home runs, four RBI, five runs scored and an .824 slugging percentage since being called up. Since his promotion he is one of only three Cubbies to get the start in each game.

Billy Hamilton is 21 for 61 with a .344 average, 10 RBI, 17 runs, five stolen bases and six extra base hits over the past 13 games.

Tyler Glasnow made it through five innings last night allowing two earned runs on three hits and striking out six. He only walked three, which is a vast improvement on past outings. He is still walking way too many though, 6.3 per nine innings pitched.

Josh Bell was moved to the cleanup spot for the first time yesterday and did not disappoint. He has nine home runs, 18 RBI and 18 runs scored so far this season. He currently has a six game hit streak that includes four home runs during that time.

Tanner Roark has pitched poorly in two consecutive starts with 11 earned runs in 9.2 innings. He has a 4.73 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and a 7.4 K/9 on the season.

Corey Knebel needed 27 pitches to get through the ninth inning and earn his third save since taking over as closer. He has a .82 ERA and 15.5 K/9 on the season.

Sam Gaviglio threw five shutout innings in his first major league start last night. He allowed three hits, struck out two and walked one. He is the tenth Mariner to start a game so far this season.

Injury Updates

Yoan Moncada hit the 7 day disabled list at Triple-A Charlotte due to his sore left thumb. He has hit safely in 27 of 34 games this season.

Trevor Story took batting practice before yesterday’s game and has been sent on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Albuquerque. I don’t even think he is really injured, it’s called the Phantom DL, and it is where players go when they start the season hitting .180 with 48 strikeouts in 111 at bats.

David Price and Pablo Sandoval will begin rehab assignments tonight at Triple-A Pawtucket. Expect Price back on the mound next week.

Yonder Alonso sat out last night after he was taken out of Wednesday night’s game due to a sore left knee. His MRI showed no structural damage so he should be back in a few days.

Justin Turner rounded third base in pain last night grabbing his right hamstring. Tests will tell us more today, but Dave Roberts was pleased that the strength is still there.

Manny Machado sat out yesterday with a sore finger
