Baseball Chatter 06/10

I wore my Mets hat out the first night I was in Philadelphia, and when I told that to GoFigure, she said

Mets in Philly, no good. Philly is a total homer town, home teams only. If you aren’t sporting home colors, there’s no good interaction.”GoFigure

Then I tried to talk to a girl at the concert who was sporting a Phillies hat, and she didn’t even know who Maikel Franco was. The hat looked cute though, i will give her that.

Here are some pics and video of my trip, it was a great time.

Kenta Maeda pitched the last four innings and earned his first save last night after Rich Hill pitched the first five innings. He was moved to the bullpen to make room for Alex Wood, who will be activated to start today against the Reds.

Michael Fulmer started the season with ten consecutive quality starts. He has 10 earned runs over his last two starts, 11 ⅓ innings. He thinks he might be tipping pitches.

Some days whatever you throw, they just get hit. I feel like I made some good pitches. Feel like I made some bad pitches. And they hit both of them. Sometimes, you gotta tip your cap to ‘em. I don’t know if I was tipping. Obviously, my sinker wasn’t sinking much. It was more running. Got in on a couple guys. They just found holes, but ultimately they hit the ball hard and strung together a lot of hits there in the fifth. Can’t explain it really.Michael Fulmer

Edwin Encarnacion is striking out 25.8 percent of the time this season. This is the first time his strikeout rate reached 20 percent over his 12 year career.

Dansby Swanson

Five players have combined for 56 errors so far this season

Addison Russell hit .162 in May and just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, it has, as he is batting .091 in June. Not that it matters to Fantasy Baseballers, but FYI, his defense sucks too.

Julio Urias is the only major league pitcher younger than Francis Martes, who made his debut with three relief innings last night for the Astros. 44 of 78 pitches were strikes.

Cameron Maybin is only the fourth Angels player to steal four bases in one game, and leads the American League with 17 stolen bases on the season.

Corey Knebel has the most strikeouts of any reliever in the majors, with 57.

We’ve got to go to work on Neris. We’re going to have him in here to discuss his lack of success recently and talk about his splitter. We’ve got to get him straightened out because he was unhittable last year. He’s hanging too many splitters.Mackanin on Neris
Pat Neshek would have been the closer if the opportunity arose on Wednesday. It didn’t happen then and it hasn’t happened since, so it will be interesting to see who gets the call when it does. I am sure it all depends on whether Hector Neris takes it upon himself to head over to Mackanin’s office for his lecture.

Mackanin has been praised for his open door policy, his great communication skills and his ability to pick his battles. Sorry, but he has shown none of those qualities so far this season. How annoying.

Andrew Triggs has a 4.7 ERA and 20 earned runs over his last four starts, 18.2 innings. He started the season going 5-2 with a 2.12 ERA

It takes Tyler Glasnow an average of 19 pitches to get through one inning. That is the most among National League starting pitchers with at least 40 innings.

Teams

Over the past eight games, Yankees pitchers have faced hitters with runners in scoring position 42 times without allowing a hit. It is the longest streak since the Cardinals did it in 2007

The Tigers are running out of time to convince their owners that they can contend.

The Rockies are 15 games above .500 for the fourth time in franchise history.

The White Sox were 13-10 to start the season and 12-24 since. They have lost eight of their last nine games

The Brewers, the Rockies and the Nationals are the only three National League teams with winning records on the road.

The Brewers have outscored opponents 60-20 in the first inning, but they score less runs in the eighth and ninth than any other team in baseball.

The Twins and the Indians are the only two teams in the American League with a losing record at home, and rank first and second in the AL Central

The Orioles usually do well as a team at the beginning of the season, but this year they are mediocre at best:

  • Runs: 18th (260)
  • OPS: 19th (.732)
  • HR: 8th (83)

Today is the first scheduled doubleheader since 2011, and the second doubleheader ever played at Tropicana Field

Injury Updates

Justin Verlander will pitch today against Boston even though he has been recovering all week from a groin strain. Monitor closely.

Robert Gsellman has a 2.95 ERA over his past three starts, making it almost impossible to send him to the bullpen when Steven Matz and Seth Lugo return from the disabled list this weekend.
