Yoan Moncada has improved his plate discipline over the past month but he is still striking out at an alarming rate. He is batting .333 with six homers, four doubles and 10 stolen bases. He had 10 walks and 30 strikeouts in April; he has seven walks and 12 strikeouts in May. His free agency has already been pushed to 2023, so expect a call up in the near future.

Matt Cain became the 12th pitcher to reach 2,000-innings with the Giants. The last pitcher to get to 2,000 innings with the Giants was Gaylord Perry in 1970.

Charlie Morton’s fastball reached 98.5 mph on Sunday. He has been dominant early in games, but has allowed 12 runs in the fifth innings of games, three times his combined total for innings one through four.

Alex Gordon is batting .152 with zero home runs, a .192 slugging percentage, and a .456 OPS after 35 games. He is 3 for 38 in May and 1 for 31 over his last ten games. All the sudden he can’t hit fastballs

Alex Wood is striking out 12.1 batters per nine innings. His career strikeout rate before this season was 8.1 per nine innings. He has struck out 40 of the past 107 batters he has faced. Wood is throwing his change-up 27.9 percent of the time, which is the most he has ever thrown it. Hitters have swung and missed the pitch 30 percent of the time, hitting .178 against it.

Christian Arroyo is hitting .224 with a .280 on-base percentage and a .368 slugging percentage.

At some point guys make adjustments, And he’s been making adjustments and he looks much better at the plate right now. He hit the home run, it was a nice-looking line drive. Injury Updates

David Price threw 75 pitches inside against Blake Swihart and Aneury Tavarez after his rehab session was rained out. Price says he feels like he’s close to a return, and it is possible that Price could be back after just one rehab start

Jared Hoying will be called up to replace Carlos Gomez, who will be placed on the 10-day disabled list before today’s game.

Travis Jankowski has a fractured right foot and will miss at least six more weeks. Cory Spangenberg will continue getting at bats playing left field.

Asdrubal Cabrera has been playing with an injured thumb but the Mets have yet to put him on the disabled list because “he’s such a big part of our team.” according to assistant general manager John Ricco.

They claim they aren’t going to call up prospect Ahmed Rosario even though he is hitting .359 with 14 extra base hits at Triple-A.

Carlos Carrasco will be further evaluated this morning, after he left the game last night with pectoral tightness.

Abraham Almonte is headed to the disabled list after he aggravated a biceps strain

Reymond Fuentes will share center field duties with Gregor Blanco while A.J. Pollack is out with a groin strain. Fuentes was hitting .376 in 36 games for Triple-A Reno, with eight doubles, three triples, eight walks, nine stolen bases and 13 RBI. He also hit .516 against lefties. He has yet to show that he can hit at the major league level, hitting .243 in 36 games over two seasons in the majors.

It is encouraging to note that Miguel Cabrera suffered the same injury as Pollack and only missed the minimum 10 days.

Team News

Mets relievers have given up seven homers in the last five games and compiled a 13.80 ERA over 15 innings. Last night they allowed four or more runs in an inning for the fifth straight game, and their starting pitchers haven’t made it into the seventh inning for 15 straight.

The Cubs have scored 172 runs and allowed 170, so within a game or so of the .500 mark is right where they belong.

The Cubs’ have turned 68 percent of balls in play into outs. Last year they had the best defensive efficiency in baseball, turning 72 percent of balls put in play into outs. They are on pace to commit 131 errors after 101 last season. Even the 101 errors was six more than major league average but the Cubbies made up for that with their range

The Athletics are in last place in the American League West with a 16-22 record. They are batting .204, the worst of any team in baseball, with runners in scoring position, including 0-for-5 last night.

The Rockies are 9-0 in one run games, the best in the majors. Their bullpen has allowed only two home runs and a .211 opponent batting average — even at Coors Field
