Sean Newcomb has the ability to strike batters out, but will likely struggle with walks, as he issued 33 free passes in 54 ⅔ innings at Triple-A Gwinnett. He should see another start though, probably on Saturday at home against the Marlins.

Dansby Swanson may have warmed up:

Luis Severino held the Orioles to just two hits over seven innings, and now owns a 2.75 ERA with 84 strikeouts in 75 innings. Love it, too bad he is a Yankee….

Chris Tillman has allowed more home runs than any other pitcher in the majors, 19, along with a 16.71 ERA in the first inning.

Bad execution, real poor execution, It felt like we got two quick outs and we were in such a hurry to get the breaking stuff going that it kind of snowballed real quick. It was bad execution. I felt good, I really didn’t have to search for anything that first inning. I think I found everything in my bullpen. All my pitches I felt like I could have gone to at any point. It was just trying to get too far ahead and trying to get that breaking stuff going so early when you get two quick outs. Pitching stupid.Tillman

Raisel Iglesias hasn’t allowed a run since April 23.

Tyler Glasnow was sent down to Triple-A to make room for Jameson Taillon, who will start on Monday after three minor league rehab starts.

Physically, mentally, I’m 100 percent. I’m as sharp as I’ve been all year. If anything I had some time to work on things I wanted to get done.Taillon

Hitters are batting .193 against Carlos Martinez, who ranks sixth among qualified starting pitchers in that category.

Either Luke Weaver or Marco Gonzales will be called up to start the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader against Milwaukee

  • Weaver: 6-1, 1.84 ERA, 49 K, 34 H, 44 IP
  • Gonzales: 1-3, 2.97 ERA

Marcus Stroman has not given up more than two runs in six of his last seven, and the Blue Jays has won each of his last seven starts, and nine of 13 on the season.

Last season, Jared Eickhoff pitched at least six innings in 23 of his 33 starts. This season, he hasn’t made it through six innings in seven of his last nine. He has given up seven runs over his last 7 ⅔ innings and sports a disappointing 5.15 ERA on the season.

Kyle Freeland hasn’t allowed more than one run in six of his 12 starts this season. He has the lowest ERA among rookie starters, at 3.34 and the four rookies in the Rockies rotation are 22-8 with a combined 3.61 ERA

Teams

The Cubs are hitting .214 with runners in scoring position, the worst in the majors

Braves starters have a 1.32 ERA after five earned runs on 23 hits in 34 innings over the past five games.

Orioles starting pitchers have the lowest combined strikeout rate in the American League, 16.8%. The 16 runs scored against them yesterday were the most in one game since 2012.

Ten different players have started a game in left field for the Giants so far this season

Phillies general manager Matt Klentak has maintained that the prospects will be summoned if they produce, and the chance for regular playing time in the majors exists.

We’re not going to rush a player to the big leagues — that does not make sense for us right now. I understand why a lot of people want us to do that. I get it. We have to take the long view in certain cases but there are also certain times where we can push the envelope. Andrew Knapp is a rookie and he had not had a single day of service time before opening day. He’s been on the club all year long. We brought up Nick Pivetta, we brought up Jake Thompson, we’ve brought up Ben Lively — though he never pitched — Ricardo Pinto is here today. It’s not like we’re sitting back on our hands, either. We will bring up the kids when we need to, but we still have to have a long view at times.Phillies GM Matt Klentak

J.D. Martinez has hit .297 with 10 home runs and 23 RBI since he was activated from the disabled list on May 12. If the Tigers decide to try and keep Martinez rather than trading him by the deadline, they risk him declining a qualifying offer and signing with another team. The problem is that the compensation pick they would get in return will be after round four because the Tigers exceed the competitive balance tax threshold of $195 million

The key to the Rockies rookie starting rotation is their ability to induce ground balls. Tony Wolters and his great pitch framing behind the plate is a nice added bonus.

Injury Updates

Cesar Hernandez went on the disabled list with an oblique strain. It is probably good since he wasn’t hitting very well recently. You just didn’t know because we are too busy talking about Maikel Franco, Odubel Herrera and the entire Phillies rotation struggles…

Logan Forsythe is batting .115 with 21 strikeouts in 16 games since returning from an extended stay on the disabled list.

Dallas Keuchel missed a start the last time his neck was bothering him and obviously that didn’t fix the problem. He is not even expected to throw a ball for at least a week.
