This off season, the Reds have said that they are going to be buying, but until now it seemed to be all talk and no play.
However, the Reds finalized a deal with the Dodgers that has been the center of a lot of attention. Let’s break it down.
Reds acquire:
- Matt Kemp– OF (21.5MM through 2019)
- Yasiel Puig– OF (Arbitration year 3)
- Alex Wood– SP (Arbitration year 3)
- Kyle Farmer– C/IF (Still under club control)
- $7 million cash
Dodgers Aquire:
- Homer Bailey– P (23MM in 2019 and a club option for 2020 at 25MM)
- Jeter Downs– SS (Minor League contract)
- Josiah Gray– P (Minor League Contract)
This trade flips Homer Bailey, who has one of the worst contracts in baseball, into four very usable players for the Reds.
It is safe to assume that the Reds will try to flip an outfielder this off season to make room for both Jesse Winker and another former Dodger Scott Schebler in the lineup, but if things don’t change, expect an outfield of Winker in right, Puig in center, and Kemp in left come opening day.
