Red Sox Sign Jenrry Mejia

Former New York Mets closer Jenrry Mejia, who had received a Lifetime Ban from MLB for failing multiple drug tests, signed a Minor League deal with the Red Sox. Under MLB guidelines a player who fails three PED tests gets the death sentence from the league.

Under the rules of the ban, a player has the right to apply for reinstatement, which Mejia did; and was granted another chance. The Red Sox, who seemingly have no interest in re-signing Craig Kimbrel, or spending any serious money on any would-be closer, are taking a flier on the former Mets closer who got 28 saves in 2014. The deal could be worth $625,000 if Mejia makes the Big Club.

Taking a flier on the 29-year-old former closer is a no-brainer for the Sox. If he’s lost an inch or two on his fastball, or fails another drug test he’ll be gone without any serious financial risk. But, if he can regain some of his former electric stuff, and keep his nose clean, it will be an absolute steal for 625K.

At the moment, the most logical closing option for the team is Ryan Brasier.
