Baseball Chatter July 3, 2019

Yesterday Was A Sad Day For Baseball Fans, Especially The Angels Team After They Lost A Good Friend And Teammate Unexpectedly On Sunday Night.  Really Reminds Us How Quick Things Can Change And How Important It Is To Cherish Our Loved Ones Every Single Day, Even When They Drive Us Absolutely Crazy (lenny) Angels

On a lighter note- hitters are still crushing the baseball at record pace. I realize we say this every year but it really is true every year lately.

“We see a small dip in 2018, but 2019 has produced home run rates unlike anything we’ve seen in recent years or not so recent years. This season’s March/April period, which typically produces the lowest home run rates due to colder weather, saw the highest home run per flyball rate of any month since 2002 when the stat began to be tracked, other than June 2017. May and June have had the highest home runs per flyball on record. When we look at raw totals, this March/April had the highest home run total of any month in this “ Owen Poindexter Forbes

There are 32 rookie hitters with at least 50 plate appearances this season, (and 126 rookies have had at least one plate appearance) There have been 5051 plate appearances by rookies with 206 home runs, 677 runs, 671 RBI and 79 stolen bases.  Overall rookies are striking out only 23% of the time and walking 8% of the time with a .270 average and .341 OBP. There are only a handful with an offensive score above five.

There are 25 rookie starting pitchers who have made at least five starts. Eight of them have a WAR of at least one. Those 25 rookie starters have an average ERA of 5.02 a FIP of 5.32, 1.74 homers allowed per nine, 7.3 strikeouts per nine and 3.27 walks per nine.

David Price (BOS-SP) has 2000 major league innings pitched now, a 3.26 ERA and a 146-77 career record
