Player News

  • Curtis Granderson was traded to the Angels for either cash or a player to be named later
  • Aaron Judge struck out with the bases loaded to extend his streak to 35 straight games, tying for the most consecutive games with a strikeout by any position player in MLB history. He is on pace to strike out 226 times
    • A caller gets banned from the Michael Kay radio show because he suggested that Joe Girardi should have taken Judge out of the game in order to avoid him striking out last night, watch:

  • Matt Chapman hit his 12th double since the All-Star break
  • Matt Moore earned his second win in 17 starts and his first win since June 20
  • R.A. Dickey gave up three home runs in a row in the sixth inning after allowing only five home runs with a 2.12 ERA over his last 10 starts, 63 ⅔ innings
  • Lucas Giolito is scheduled to make his Sox debut Monday at home against the Twins
    • 3-1 with a 1.71 ERA in his last five starts at Triple-A
  • Jake Arrieta earned his 13th win and is 5-1 with a 2.00 ERA over his last 7 starts.
    • Has allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven starts since the all-star break.
  • Sal Romano made it through seven innings for the first time, and gave up five hits
  • German Marquez gave up four runs, including three home runs, on seven hits over 5 ⅔ innings
    • 6-0 with a 3.12 ERA over his past eight starts at Coors Field
  • JaCoby Jones was called back up after batting .324 in his last 10 games at Triple-A. Let’s see if this translates to the majors as he was hitting .137 with three extra base hits over 51 at-bats for the Tigers this season
  • Ian Kennedy faced 16 batters over 2 ⅔ innings with five earned runs on six hits and two walks
  • Cam Bedrosian was used in the sixth inning, Blake Parker came in the seventh inning and Yusmeiro Petit got through the eighth in 13 pitches and gave up a single and walk in the ninth before he was replaced with Kenyan Middleton.
    • Middleton allows a single to load the bases and Machado hit a grand slam
  • Andrew Heaney struck out five and gave up five earned on seven hits across five innings. He did not walk a batter.
    • his fastball averaged 89-90 mph, only slightly slower than he did when he was last healthy in 2015.

  • Chris Taylor played shortstop for the first time and got another four hits. He has multiple hits in 31 games batting .367 from the leadoff spot
  • Justin Nicolino has a 1.74 ERA with obly two earned runs over his last two starts, 10 1/3 innings.
  • Corey Knebel tied a club record for strikeouts by a reliever with 98 strikeouts in only 57 innings. He has at least one strikeout in 56 of his 57 appearances

Team News

  • The Milwaukee bullpen entered yesterday with a 0.70 ERA and a .174 batting average against over the last seven games
  • The Phillies have lost six straight, five of which have been to two of the worst teams in the league, the Padres and the Giants
  • Tampa Bay is 2-9 over the last 11 games and now sit three games behind the Yankees for a wild card spot. It doesn’t sound like much but there are four other teams in the American League separating them
  • The Cardinals trail the Cubbies by 1½ games, but had to send both Adam Wainwright and Trevor Rosenthal to the disabled list over the past two days
  • The Dodgers lead the league in so many categories, including the most walks, 491
  • The Rockies have scored 29 runs in their past three games.
  • The Diamondbacks have lost 24 of their last 39 games
  • Their bullpen has allowed 16 earned runs in their last 16 innings

Injury Updates

  • Max Scherzer was placed on the 10-day disabled list with neck inflammation. He will be eligible to return Aug. 24 and plans to take the mound Friday Aug 25

  • Drew Pomeranz left last night’s game with back spasms.12-4 with a 3.39 ERA entering the game. He had won six straight decisions and hadn’t lost since June 11.
  • Corey Kluber limped off the mound in the sixth inning with a sprained right ankle. It is a low ankle sprain rather than the ‘dreaded high ankle sprain’ and may not need a trip to the disabled list
    • Kluber is 5-0 in his last six starts and 9-1 since coming off the disabled list on June 1.

  • Mark Melancon is contemplating surgery in an attempt to get healthy by next spring but neither him nor his trainer will discuss any details
  • Zach Eflin gave up three runs in his first 10 pitches, and then exited the game after the fifth inning with a sore right shoulder

Homers

  • Miguel Sano hit two of the Twins’ six home runs after going 4-for-25 over the last six games
  • Byron Buxton only needed 13.85 seconds to get around the bases for an inside the park home run, which was the fastest time recorded by Statcast in the past three years.

  • Max Kepler homered for the second straight game, giving him six in August and 16 on the season
  • Nelson Cruz went 3-for-5 with a 482 foot homer
  • Keon Broxton and Orlando Arcia went back to back
    • Broxton hit his fifth home run over the last seven days, number 20 on the season
    • Arcia hit number 12 after missing a couple games with back spasms
    • Matt Adams hit his 17th homer of the season, 16 of which have come with the Braves. He is still going to lose playing time
  • Manny Machado hit three home runs and drove in seven.
    • It was his third grand slam in the past 11 games.
    • Hitting .371 with eight home runs and 26 RBI over the last 14 games
  • Paul DeJong hit homer number 19
  • Jason Kipnis and Jay Bruce homered off Ian Kennedy in the first inning
    • Bruce is hitting .406 with three homers and 11 RBI since joining the Indians, including three home runs and six RBI over the last two games
  • Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve hit back to back home runs off Sean Manaea
  • J.T. Realmuto hit a career high 14th homer of the season
  • Charlie Blackmon , Gerardo Parra and Carlos Gonzalez homered for the Rockies
  • Nick Delmonico hit his fourth homer in his last 11 plate appearances, batting .382.
    • He has been on base in 14 of his 15 games since getting called up
  • Dexter Fowler is 15-for-34 with a .441 average in the past 11 games since returning from the disabled list
