  • Tim Beckham reached based in his first four plate appearances and five of six overall. He scored three runs and drove in three
    • He has 12 extra-base hits in 12 games since joining the Orioles

Chicago Cubs
  • lost for the seventh time in 10 games.
  • Jon Lester had three earned runs on seven hits in six innings
  • Chicago led the division by 5½ games before play on Aug. 2, but the Cardinals have closed with eight straight victories

Chicago White Sox
  • Jose Abreu hit two homers and became the first player in White Sox history to start his MLB career with four consecutive 20-homer seasons.
  • Reynaldo Lopez allowed two runs on four hits over six innings in his White Sox debut Friday He struck out six and walked three.
    • The Sox will try not to overwork the 23-year-old righty. Before being called up, Lopez already had thrown 121 innings at Class AAA Charlotte.

  • Adam Duvall recorded his 10th outfield assist of the season, throwing out Thames at home on a Domingo Santana single to end the third inning.
