Baseball Chatter 06/29

A softball pitcher was throwing out the first pitch yesterday at the Royals game, and Drew Butera had never caught a softball pitcher before, so he went out before the game and took a few practice..”

This is what happens when you throw your teammate under the bus..Miguel Montero is not good at throwing out baserunners anyways. Frankly, he sucks. Upon his departure, opponents were 31 for 31 running against him.

Bartolo Colon is 1-6 with a 10.38 ERA over his past nine starts, which include 71 hits in 39 innings. Will he remain in the Braves rotation?

I don’t know, I’ll be honest with you, I’m going to process everything tonight and then kind of see what’s going on. The bullpen is always an option. Like I said, I’ll just kind of wait and see what happens in a couple of days. Brian Snitker

Marcus Stroman did not allow any Orioles to reach scoring position last night, he allowed only five hits and struck out in 7 ⅔ innings.

Carlos Rodon threw 94 pitches to get through the fifth inning in his season debut last night. He allowed three runs on two hits, walked six and struck out two. It was much worse than it even sounds, I can tell you.

Luis Castillo struck out nine, allowed two runs on five hits and walked three in 107 pitches to get through 5 ⅔ innings. His fastball averages 98 mph.

Trevor Bauer has a 97.3 mph fastball and a 74.6 mph curveball.

Injury Updates

Kris Bryant will miss today and could hit the disabled list with a mild to moderate sprained ankle.

Freddie Freeman felt good in his first live batting practice since he fractured his wrist May 17.

It’s a good feeling, It’s a big relief for me. I swung a lot more than I did yesterday and it was actually getting better and better as I kept swinging more. I was hitting line drives to left (field) just like I wanted to do. I was able to control the bat, be able to drive with my top hand, so all in all it was a great day.Freeman

Freeman will play Saturday and Monday at Charlotte and Tuesday and Wednesday at Gwinnett against Norfolk before coming off the disabled list for a four-game series against the Nationals that starts Thursday (July 6).

Mike Trout is getting closer to a return, but no exact date yet.

He’s taking soft toss in the cage and he will take some live arm in the cage if things go well today with soft toss,He’s probably not out in the field hitting for a couple of days yet. Maybe tomorrow or the next day, depending on how his workout goes today.

Gregory Bird is working out but will not begin a minor league rehab today as expected. Girardi knows Bird is working out and that is about it.

Still trying to get him on the field. Originally the plan was on Thursday but I am not sure where we are on that, We are trying to get him on the field. He is working out right now. Girardi on Bird

Danny Salazar is scheduled to throw a rehab game on Saturday. Rumors say Salazar will lose his spot in the rotation when he returns. Indians president of baseball operations says:

“We’ve had two primary goals with Danny, First we want to get him healthy. The second is on making sure he has consistent mechanics and consistent intensity every time he picks up a baseball. If we can do that, and help him get back to being healthy and in a good spot mechanically, hopefully that will translate into success for him as a starter. We are going to condition him as a starter. Danny has had periods of time where he’s one of the best pitchers in baseball, If we can get him back at the level he’s capable of pitching at, it would be a huge boost to our team. But this is the time of year you’re looking at all alternatives – internal and external. Hopefully, Danny can be one of those boosts among our internal alternatives. Chris Antonetti

Teams

The Rockies are hitting .206 over their current eight game losing streak

The Tigers have lost 15 of their past 21 games, and the trade rumors have already begun

Dodgers have been held to six runs while losing two of the first three games against the Angels while batting .148 (13 for 88) as a team.

The Phillies have won two games in a row and swept the Mariners since this rant by Freddy Galvis:
In spring training, if you told me we were going to have this record, I wouldn’t believe it. I believed we had a good team. But we just can’t put anything together. We play well for five or six games and then we go to another six- or seven-game losing streak. It’s hard. It’s hard to see. It’s hard to believe it. (Bleep) it. We have to (bleeping) play harder every single day. We need to try to do better.Freddy Galvis
Galvis also ranted about the lack of protective netting between the batter and the fans after a young girl was taken to the hospital when his foul ball hit her in the face.
What year is this? 2016? It’s 2016 and fans keep getting hit by foul balls when you’re supposed to have a net to protect the fans, The fans give you the money, so you should protect them, right? We’re worried about speeding up the game. Why don’t you put up a net and protect all the fans? They’re worried about stupid stuff, They should worry about the real stuff. That’s real stuff. What if I broke all her teeth. What if I broke her nose. If I hit her in one eye and she loses that. What are they going to do? They’re going to forget in three days, It’s going to be a big deal for two, three days. Everybody in TV, media, whatever. But after three days what’s going to happen? They’re going to forget. But that family won’t forget that. Do you think the little baby will forget that? It’s true life. It’s something you have to put before everything. Safety first. SafetyGalvis on Protective Netting
