Baseball Chatter 05/13

Matt Harvey threw 106 pitches and only 59 of them were strikes. He has given up 10 home runs and at least five runs in each of his last three starts with a 9:13 K:BB in 14.2 innings.

Jose Bautista had one homer and seven RBIs in 25 games in April. He has three homers and seven RBIs in 11 games so far in May. He is still seven for his last 41 at bats.

Joe Biagini has not walked a batter in any of his past 13 outings, covering 21 1/3 innings.

That guy is nasty, man. Every single guy that gets on (second) base, I ask them what they think about him and they’ve all got the same answer: he’s something.Devon Travis on Joe Biagini.

Neftali Feliz is no longer the Brewers’ closer. He was 8 of 9 in save opportunities but 0-4 with a 6.19 ERA and five home runs allowed in 18 appearances.

I think we see a pitcher who, in certain spots, in getting himself behind in the count and he becomes a little more predictable at that point, Neftali is a veteran. He’s pitched on the biggest stages in the biggest types of games.

He’s been through periods like this before in his career. We’ll find spots to get him for him to get him some success and go from there. Ultimately, this is part of the ebb and flow of a baseball season where you have some guys performing well, some guys taking their lumps, but I certainly feel like Neftali is going to be a productive member of our bullpen.

Guys are going to have to step up. And how that works; it just kind of depends on how the game goes. We’re going to have to be a little fluid in that. Ideally, I’d like for those guys to know what to expect, but I think we’re in a spot right now where we have to be flexible.

They all want the ball, so that’s not an issue. We’ll just kind of play it inning by inning, hitter by hitter and matchup by matchup and see how it goes.Brewers Manager Craig Counsell on Feliz and the Closer Situation

Save opportunities will likely go to Corey Knebel first, who owns a 1.00 ERA with 29 strikeouts in 18 innings. Carlos Torres, Jacob Barnes and Oliver Drake could also get some chances.

Matt Kemp extended his hitting streak to 12 games. He is batting .358 (19 for 53).

Joey Gallo leads the league with 54 strikeouts, but second in the American League with 12 home runs and leads the Rangers with 27 RBIs.

Yan Gomes has at least one hit in 11 of his last 14 starts. Since April 17, he is batting .381.

Eric Hosmer is hitting .403 with a .581 slugging percentage, six extra-base hits and 10 RBIs in his past 16 games. He has raised his batting average 97 points from .192 to .289 in that span. He entered yesterday batting .397 with a .438 on-base percentage and slugging .569 in his last 15 games

Clayton Kershaw is 89-0 in the regular season when the Dodgers give him at least four runs of support.

Tyler Glasnow lasted 2 ⅓ innings last night and allowed seven runs on seven hits. He has given up at least three runs in every start this season. He has a 7.98 ERA and 2.08 WHIP through 29.1 innings. The fact that he still strikes out batters means zero to those who own him in Fantasy.

Cody Bellinger hit five home runs in the last week and seven in the past 16 games. However, his 10 strikeouts over his last 29 at-bats may be an indication that pitchers are figuring him out. If you don’t sell high, you could be sorry.

Ervin Santana has held opponents to one or fewer earned runs in seven of eight starts and owns a 1.50 ERA, improving his AVG/OBP to .254/.329 since April 25th, when it was .213/.280

Dylan Bundy has quality starts in all eight of his outings so far.

T.J. Rivera remained in the lineup even though Lucas Duda was activated from the disabled list yesterday. He will get time at first base, second base and third base as long as he continues to hit.

Maikel Franco has seen just 39.4 percent of pitches in the strike zone, the lowest percentage of any Phillies hitter this season. Pitchers are throwing fastballs at him 45.3 percent of the time, also the lowest of any Phillies hitters. This is because he can’t hit off speed pitches.

Andrew Cashner has received a total of six runs of support over six starts this season, and all have been in his past three outings. He has still posted a quality start in all three as well as in four of his six starts

Injury Updates

Alex Gordon batted last for the second time in his career. He is 1-for-27 the last nine games. He then left the game in the seventh inning with right groin tightness

Cam Bedrosian could throw off a mound next week. He still feels discomfort and won’t get on a mound until he doesn’t feel anything in his groin.

The Diamondbacks activated David Freese and Adam Frazier from the disabled list.

Chris Ianetta was hit in the face and had to go to the hospital. Stay tuned on that injury.
