Carlos Martínez is the first pitcher to walk at least eight hitters and strike out at least 11 in a game since Randy Johnson in 1993. Martinez also sets the MLB record for fewest innings pitched in a start with at least 8 walks and 11 Ks.

Sam Dyson has not been told that he lost the job as closer, and could very likely be called upon the next time a save situation presents itself

Manager Jeff Banister said that he has no concerns where Dyson pitches in a game after he and pitching coach Doug Brocail have spent the past four days working on the mechanical flaw that led to Dyson surrendering 11 runs in three innings this season.

Eric Thames has hit four homers in the last three games, and is 12 for 29 during an eight-game hitting streak.

The Cardinals are off to their worst start in franchise history, with the worst record in the National League. Their defense has made 10 errors in 11 games, and continuing to play Matt Adams shows they are not committed to improving their defense any time soon. Adams is hitting .167, so using him in left field ahead of Grichuk or Jose Martinez makes little sense.

Jarrett Parker made a great catch yesterday, but crashed into the outfield wall and broke his collarbone. Melvin Upton Jr. could get the opportunity to play.

Jake Odorizzi was placed on the 10-day disabled list with hamstring tightness, and Chase Whitley was called up from Triple-A Durham to add a fresh arm to a weary bullpen that covered seven innings Saturday. It is still unclear who will pitch the next two starts in his absence.

Mitch Moreland and Wil Myers lead MLB with 10 extra base hits each, Yoenis Cespedes ranks second with nine.

David Price threw his third bullpen session yesterday, and could face some hitters by early next week.

As we’ve done with each — the next phase of the throwing, the different types of throwing from long toss to the bullpen being included to what the next step is –We’ll sit with David and kind of map out what we feel is best according to his physical response. The one thing that we’re trying to do is not throw a number of variables in at the same time so there’s a progression You go from the long toss to the flat ground to spinning a breaking ball. Then incorporate the angle of the mound. Incorporate some ups and downs, and then also at that point where you start to add in a full assortment of pitches. So there’s a little bit more of a systematic approach toward the addition of each variable going forward.John Farrell on Price
That’s always probably the toughest part of Spring Training, that’s always the biggest part for a pitcher, It’s not the amount of pitches you throw. It’s throwing pitches and then taking that break and then getting back up and doing it again. That’s always one of the tougher parts in Spring Training, that’s kind of what I’m going through right now. It went good, Got up and down a couple of times and see how we feel tomorrow. Yeah, I expect to be myself, I don’t see any drop off or anything like that. We’ve put in the work and I expect to be myself whenever I come back.”David Price

James Paxton has zero earned runs after 21 innings pitched to start the season. Last night he went eight innings, giving up only two hits. He is the 10th pitcher ever to open a season with three scoreless starts of at least six innings each.

David Dahl will undergo an MRI bone scan in Arizona on Friday to check the status of his stress fractured rib. Don’t expect to see him until at least May.

The Royals hit 13 home runs over the past 10 games, and 11 of those were solo shots.

The Royals’ starting pitchers have a combined 2.70 ERA, Last night Nathan Karns allowed one run on four hits in six innings pitched.

Marcell Ozuna and J.T. Realmuto have combined to drive in nearly half (23) of the team’s 50 runs.
