Baseball Chatter 04/14

Luis Severino was a monster yesterday when he struck out 11, a career-high, as 70 percent of his pitches were in the strike zone. Severino pitched quickly and showed such great mound presence we had not seen from him before yesterday. Come to find out, he got the opportunity to work with the king of mound presence this offseason, Pedro Martinez.

DFS Alert – The Pirates went 1-8 last season when they played at Wrigley Field. By the way, have I told you DraftKings sucks? The Pirates are also 1-31 with runners in scoring position so far this season.

DFS Alert – Johnny Cueto is 5-0 with a 1.33 ERA over his last seven starts, Last season he faced the Rockies four times and went 3-0 with a 1.19 ERA.

DFS Alert – The Dodgers are batting .211 with 39 strikeouts against left-handed pitching. Last year they hit .213 off lefties on the season, ranking them last in both average and on-base percentage against LHP.

MItch Moreland set a club record yesterday, getting his seventh double in seven games. Derrick Lee (2007)and Yadier Molina (2016) both hold the current record with eight doubles in eight games.

The Dodgers have lost their last five in a row, it might have something to do with the fact that they can’t score any runs. Over the past five games, the Dodgers have scored five runs, total.

David Price will pitch a bullpen session tomorrow..Go Price go

The Angels rotation is their weakest link so far this season, allowing 50 hits in 51 innings and an ERA of 6.00. Their starters have only pitched through the sixth inning once.

Speaking of Angels starters, Garrett Richards will not be activated on Sunday when eligible to come off the disabled list.

They currently don’t even have a timetable for his return. Richards only made six starts last season

before a partial tear in his elbow ended his season.

He is one of two pitchers who opted for stem cell therapy rather than Tommy John surgery. He was healthy heading into this season, but he left the game in his first start with a bicep strain

It looks awfully close to the ulnar collateral ligament to me. Too close for comfort anyway.

Pablo Sandoval sat out yesterday, he is only hitting .133 so far this season, but two of the Red Sox four home runs have come from him.

Rick Porcello has pitched at least six innings in 20 consecutive starts. That is the longest active streak in baseball. He pitches tonight against the Rays.

Danny Espinosa is doing exactly what you drafted him to do. Three ninth inning homers and 12 RBIs in 10 games so far this season. Sure is AVG/OBP is .229/.263 but you expected that.

Greg Bird was back in the lineup yesterday taking a seat for four games due to a sore right ankle, although one could be justified in assuming it was more than just a sore ankle keeping him out of the lineup. After last night’s 0 for 4 and three strikeouts, he is 1 for 20 on the season.

Josh Donaldson had to leave in the sixth after he aggravated his sore right calf. He already missed the home opener Tuesday because of it. I expect him to go to the disabled list after he is reevaluated today, but of course I could be wrong.

Toronto is off to the worst start to a season in franchise history. They are 1-8 with the least number of runs scored in MLB.

The Brewers are sitting at .500 for the first time since Ryan Braun got busted for using steroids, oh wait no, for the first time since last April 15.

Robert Gsellman had eight earned runs in less than five innings last night. He was rescued by the Mets bullpen, who threw a combined 10 ⅓ scoreless innings.

The Mets lead MLB with 20 homers.

Sonny Gray threw two 15-pitch sessions to batters without issues before yesterday’s game and looks to throw three innings on Monday. He could be back by the end of April.

Jon Gray reinjured his big toe and had to exit the game after he allowed one hit over three scoreless. He initially injured the toe this spring, and had x-rays taken yesterday. So far there is no word on the severity of his injury. Don’t drop Jon Gray!!!

Lorenzo Cain is doing what he was supposed to do last season. Yesterday he went 2-for-3 with an RBI, one run and a stolen base. He also took one walk, and has now walked more than any other player in baseball.

In 24 games since last April, Vince Velazquez has pitched into the seventh inning twice.

So far this season he has pitched a total of nine innings over two starts, throwing 194 pitches. That is simply way too many for nine innings. I agree with Lenny in that Velazquez is eventually going to be the closer in Philly. However, it is not likely that it happens any time soon, or even this season.

Michael Brantley has an RBI in six of eight games so far this season.

The Giants have lost 120 games straight when down heading into the ninth inning.

Lonnie Chisenhall was activated yesterday, and Tyler Naquin was sent down to Triple-A Columbus. Naquin was batting .235 but even more important was his below average defense.

Ian Desmond is making his way back to you babe, yesterday he took infield practice like a “nearly full-functioning first baseman.” He will up his activity in the coming days.

Jacoby Jones did not take one walk in 28 major league plate appearances last season, but this year tells a different story. So far, Jones has walked three times in 21 plate appearances.

As of yesterday, the Royals had 24 runs scored, and half of them came off home runs, 10 solo and one two-run.
