Baseball Chatter 04/12

Clay Buchholz pitched for 21 minutes. The Mets had a three run lead three batters in, and Buchholz recorded his first out on his 22nd pitch. His final pitch was 70 mph, bouncing toward home plate. He was holding his right arm and is now out with a strained right forearm. Stick a fork in him. Phillies fans should be relieved, forget about the $13.5 million the Phillies are paying for this guy. UGH

The Giants haven’t made a comeback in the ninth inning since 2015. Last year they went 0-62 when trailing into the ninth inning

The Cardinals bullpen has the highest ERA in baseball, 8.14. Yep, even worse than the Tigers.

The Mets have hit 46 home runs in the last 21 visits to Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies have won by a score of 4-3 in three of seven g have played 7 games, 3 have ended in a 4-3 score.

Matt Moore has pitched at least eight innings while allowing no more than one run:

  • Twice with the Rays
  • Three times with the Giants

Adrian Beltre isn’t coming back so soon after all. After he felt ‘a twinge’ in his already strained right calf , an MRI taken Saturday showed another strain in a different spot on the same calf. This makes three calf injuries in less than two months. April 29 is ‘Beltre dancing legs bobblehead’ night but there probably isn’t going to be any dancing going on. I bet on Beltre missing that party.

It’s not just tightness. I have tightness all over my body and deal with it. I felt something in there that wasn’t right.Beltre on injury

TEX@LAA: Jones on the status of Beltre’s injury

Joey Gallo will hold on to the third base job longer than expected. If he continues to hit well, expect him to take Jurickson Profar’s job away when Beltre returns. Profar is horrible.

Sam Dyson has blown both save opportunities, and owns a 33.00 ERA

We can’t continue to lose ballgames in this manner. We’ll look at all our opportunities and see where we can go. It’s been inconsistent. These guys in the bullpen find a certain tempo, a certain rhythm that works for them. He’s trying to figure it out. He’s been a quality pitcher for us for two seasons. He will figure it out.Jeff Bannister on Dyson

George Springer hit his fourth lead off homer in nine games, off of Ariel Miranda’s first pitch. It’s the first time any player has had as many leadoff homers this early in the season.

Seven times this season, a Diamondbacks reliever has recorded four or more outs. Randall Delgado has three of them. Archie Bradley dominated in his first official relief appearance last night, striking out seven in 10 outs. He threw a combination of his 97 mph fastball, 91 mph cutter and a sharp-breaking curveball.

Bartolo Colon is 0-2 with a 25.65 ERA in two starts at Marlins Park and 6-1 with a 1.57 ERA in 12 starts everywhere else since August of last season

The Braves are hitting .157 (11-for-70) with runners in scoring position.

Edwin Encarnacion grounded into a double play twice last night with the bases loaded.

It was a tough day, And he’s had them before. As frustrated as you get or as cold as you get, good hitters get that hot. There will be days, hopefully soon, when I’m sitting here saying he carried us or he did this and this. He’s too good. Just right now, he’s a little stuck in-between.

Colorado got four hits last night, three of them were solo homers by Carlos Gonzalez, Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado. Hopefully it is a sign that Rockies top batters are coming around…slowly but surely people.

Trevor Story sat out last night, .after batting hitting .148 over his first eight games and striking out 12 times in 27 at-bats, or 44 percent of the time. We knew Story was going to strike out a bunch, but that only becomes amplified when he isn’t hitting any homers.

Manager Bud Black insisted that his primary objective was to get utility infielder Cristhian Adames some playing time, so he gave Adames a start at short.

J.D. Martinez had his first batting practice inside a batting cage Monday. He will likely have rehab stint in Lakeland before rejoining team, probably in May

After making an adjustment to his arm slot, Matt Boyd was excellent over his six inning start yesterday. Boyd was dropping the arm too low and couldn’t stay on top of the ball — which greatly impacted his off-speed pitches, in particular the change-up. He threw his changeup 26 times, and got eight swings and misses — including four for strike three.

The Royals’ bullpen has a 7.77 ERA, with 19 earned runs in 22 innings.

In the American League, the Royals bullpen:

  • WHIP = 1.77 ranks last
  • BB% = 18.6 ranks last
  • opponents OBP = .425 ranks second to last

Byron Buxton:

  • was caught looking for strike three in the third
  • took a thigh-high fastball for a third strike in the fifth
  • called out on a fastball in the eighth.

Buxton currently owns the award for most strikeouts in baseball. He has 17 of them in only 30 plate appearances. His average sits at a lovely .069, putting Mendoza to shame.

Brett Gardner is 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts, including two games where he stole two bases.

The Pirates entered yesterday:

  • 27th in the majors in runs (21)
  • 27th in slugging percentage (.309)
  • 17th in batting average (.237)
  • 25th in OPS (.618)
  • Tied for last in home runs (3)
  • Last in National League in SB (1)

For the second consecutive night, the Pirates did not produce an extra-base hit. They have just nine extra-base hits (six doubles, three home runs) through seven games. They did, however, triple their stolen base total thanks to Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco in the third.
