Baseball Chatter 03/29

Nationals manager Dusty Baker twice rolled his eyes when being asked about the closer in a media session yesterday. As I wrote in the chatter yesterday, stop assuming it is Glover until you either see it or hear it from a manager’s mouth. And for goodness sakes, quit drafting Glover like Dusty loves youngsters.

Can’t say yet, (who the closer is). We’re still in the process. We’ll let you know. Wish we didn’t have to answer this question every day. I’ve got to talk to [pitching coach] Mike Maddux. Was looking for him today. We’ll come up with that person. There’s always debate, healthy or unhealthy, That’s what makes the world go-round. Differences of opinion. I welcome differences of opinion.Dusty Baker

The Blue Jays starting pitchers have had a real nice spring, especially J.A. Happ, with a 1.59 ERA.

The Diamondbacks optioned Ketel Marte to Triple-A yesterday, so it looks like it’s down to Nick Ahmed and Chris Owings at shortstop and that is just about all we know

The Mets are only expecting a 15 game suspension for closer Jeury’s Familia, but I wont believe that until I see it.

Image result for not buying it

Familia, 27, was arrested and charged with simple assault last Oct. 31 at his Fort Lee, N.J., home. Rivas was the alleged victim. But the charges were dropped at the request of his wife and her attorney, and a Fort Lee Municipal Court judge signed an order dismissing the case in December.

Of course she had the charges dropped, why should she lose her income too? What sticks out the most to me here is that he was actually arrested and the prosecutor did file charges against him whether they were dropped or not.

Why would Aroldis Chapman get suspended for 30 without being arrested, and without any charges filed and Familia get 15?

Nate Karns allowed just one earned run over his last 12 innings, striking out 16 and lowering his ERA to 3.91 on the spring. He has been named the fifth starter in the Royals rotation.

Terry Collins has yet to name Robert Gsellman as a part of the Mets rotation, but it is almost a guarantee. Steven Matz is still questionable to start the season, and Gsellman posted a 2.31 ERA and 1.07 WHIP this spring after making seven good major league starts for the team last season. The Mets have no reason to send him down to the minors.

Sonny Gray is not close to returning from his back injury, and manager Bob Melvin made it clear he is “going to be conservative.”

Aaron Nola’s spring OUCH:

  • 19 ⅓ Innings Pitched
  • 8.3I6 ERA

But hey, at least he finished healthy, right?

Matt Adams is hitting .333 on the spring but still has no place to play. I was told by an unnamed but reliable source that Adams would be traded by opening day.

Kyle Seagar has hit .216 over the first month of the past three seasons. Although he came around in each of those seasons, with at least 20 home runs in all five of his full major league seasons.

Anibal Sanchez will start the season in the bullpen, so Matt Boyd will be the fifth starter in Detroit. Boyd has a 2.49 ERA and 21:0 K:BB ratio over 21.2 innings this spring.

Joe Girardi is “leaning toward” batting Jacoby Ellsbury fifth, watch:
