Yankees: Quick Hits -Week 1

Injury News

  • Miguel Andujar tore his labrum diving into a base and is gone for at least two weeks. He may need surgery if the rest doesn’t improve the tear. If that happens he’ll be gone for the whole season.
Fantasy Impact: Don’t deal Andujar now – you’ll get pennies on the dollar. D.J. Lemehieu will get a lot more playing time, as will Tyler Wade. Wade had a great spring and I think his bat will surprise a lot of people.
  • Giancarlo Stanton strained his left bicep on an awkward swing. He’s on the 10-day IL but the talk is that we “might see him by the end of the month”. Given recent Yankee history, I’d say mid-May is more likely
Fantasy Impact: Clint Frazier and his legendary bat-speed have been recalled from AAA. He’ll definitely get some playing time and could be a nice speculative add.
  • The battle between Greg Bird and Luke Voit is over. Due to various injuries both will be in the lineup for the foreseeable future.
Fantasy Impact: Playing time was my only concern with either. I’m buying on both.
Non-Injury News:

  • Gary Sanchez looks like he’s returning to the hitter he was in 2016 and 2017. The homer he hit last night was the best swing he’s taken in two years. You can’t swing that way with shoulder problems – I think he’s finally healthy and ready to become the top offensive catcher in MLB.
Fantasy Impact: He was probably taken in the 5th – 7th round of your league. If you plan to deal for him, now is the time. His price will probably be significantly higher in a week or two.
  •  Domingo German and Luis Cessa both look fantastic. German’s got a little work to do on fastball command but he throws very hard, has movement and his off speed stuff is terrific. Cessa’s been around for a few years now but his stuff looks better than it ever has. Fantasy Impacts: Did you lose Luis Severino? Andrew Heaney? Mike Foltynewicz? German could be a good fill in. The Yankees need him. Are you in a Holds league and looking for an underappreciated, cheap add? You can do worse than Cessa.
