On the surface, this trade seems very weird for the Mariners. And I think this may be the situation
where what seems weird actually is. Seattle is clearly retooling their roster but possibly without
regard to their home ballpark. It’s far from certain how the power approaches of Carlos Santana and Jay Bruce are going to play in the artist soon to formerly be known as Safeco Field.
But from the Phillies standpoint, they get more certainty defensively. Now, Rhys Hoskins can slide back
first base which is where he will not be a defensive liability. Scott Kingery or Cesar Hernandez can
play second. The other may well be trade bait or dare I say a super utility infielder which could be
useful since injuries inevitably do occur. Pazos is a 27 year old lefty with a cool mustache who posted
solid numbers in 2018. He was 4-1 in 50 IP with a 2.88 ERA but he may be more of a situational guy as
his K/9 is 8.10 and his FIP amounted to a 3.88 ERA. Still, he seems to be a good get for a bullpen that
was at best inconsistent in 2018.
Adding to the Pen is Juan Nicasio who surprisingly had trouble keeping it in the park last year. In 42 IP,Nicasio posted a 6.00 ERA and gave up six HR. Nicasio had a DL stint last year with a knee injury but
is Under contract for one year. He certainly exhibits potential as he was very solid for the Pirates and Cardinals in 2017. He was 5-5 with a 2.98 ERA and can fit the roles of long man and set up man.
While not an elite player, Segura has batted over .300 each of the last three years and has posted
double digit home runs at the same time. He can give the Phillies stability at a position they’ve lacked it at since they dealt the defensively adept but average challenged Freddy Galvis. He will also give
them a much needed top of the order presence.
