Phillies make small deal

Last night, the Phillies struck a deal with the Los Angeles Angels. They sent the beleaguered Luis Garcia
to the Angels for left hander Jose Alvarez. On the surface, this is a swap of relief pitchers but it may
work on several levels.

At 31, Garcia was respectable until he was peppered badly by three late season outings and finished with
an ERA of over 6. Garcia was also out of minor league options which could have had an effect on this deal. All of that said, Garcia is a good arm who throws in the mid to high 90’s and could work out if he could hone his command in his new organization.

Alvarez works for the Phillies. Having posted a 2.71 ERA and a 1.3 WAR in 2018, he could be a lefty thatworks in a similar role to what Adam Morgan had. Morgan is also out of options. He tied his career
high in strikeouts in 2018 and was a reliable cog in a generally unreliable bullpen.

Maybe the change of scenery will work for both.
