Today’s starting pitcher profile: Nestor Cortes
Cortes is a Cuban-born 24 year old southpaw. At 5’ll, 205 lbs he has been in the Yankee organization since he was acquired in the 2013 draft. He’s a finesse pitcher, who throws a 4-seam fastball 88-89 mph. He also throws a slider and a curveball, which he’s thrown as slow as 47 mph.
Cortes was selected by Baltimore in the 2017 Rule 5 Draft and was in the big league bullpen on Opening Day in 2018. He made one disastrous start for Baltimore, after which he was designated for assignment and the Yankees reacquired him.
He posted a 3.71 ERA over 111.2 innings in Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre in ’18.
