Multi-Position Eligibility 2016

Every year I make it a point to roster a few players who are eligible to play at more than one position. It is nice to have added security just in case. There should definitely be some value added to those who qualify at multiple positions, even if that value can’t really be measured across the board.

  • The easier it is to pick up a player, the less valuable multi position eligibility becomes.
  • If you can make roster moves daily, but you can only pick up players once a week, position depth on your roster id pretty valuable. When a player becomes injured during the season, you will want to manipulate your active roster so that all positions are gaining stats at all times.
  • If a player is eligible at both middle and corner infield, he has more flexibility making him more useful.
  • Keep in mind that some players who qualify at more than one position are simply utility players with a limited number of at bats and only fill in when someone gets injured or needs a rest. If he was a great player to begin with, he would have a full time job so keep realistic expectations of utility players.
  • A catcher who no longer actually plays catcher is more valuable because Catcher is the least reliable position in Fantasy Baseball because very few end up with 500 at bats in a season. When you can use an everyday first baseman as a catcher, you decrease the risk of injury and increase the chances of getting 500 at bats from that position.
