Baseball Chatter 12/19

The Dodgers and Yankees have made serious attempts to get below the luxury tax threshold by 2019, when the free agent market looks to be full of top name talent, including Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, Charlie Blackmon, Clayton Kershaw and that’s not all…

Matt Kemp will get paid $21.5 million for the next two seasons but don’t count on seeing him in the Dodgers lineup.

Christian Yelich has expressed his dismay with the Marlins’ decision to trade Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna and Dee Gordon, but now says he is willing to listen to the organizational plan moving forward.

He is under contract through 2022 so you’re damn right he better be willing to listen to the plan. He has no leverage if he wants to get paid so if I were his agent I would tell him to STFU and get to work. Mama need a new pair of shoes boy!!

Jonathan Schoop enters his second year of arbitration in 2018, and coming off a career best season, is expected to nearly triple the $3.475 million he made in 2017. If the Orioles were serious about trading Manny Machado before he becomes a free agent, shouldn’t they be making an attempt to retain Schoop?

Silence.

The Cardinals have been oft-linked to Machado, though president of baseball operations John Mozeliak implied  that he’d have a hard time making a deal for Machado

If you’re trading away two to three prospects that have a combined 18 years of control… for one [year]? That doesn’t sit well with me.John Mozeliak

Orioles pitching is what got them to the playoffs three of the past six seasons, so the Orioles probably won’t trade Machado for anything less than a couple starting pitchers.

The Red Sox re-signed Mitch Moreland for the next two seasons which may indicate they aren’t too interested in Eric Hosmer, but it certainly doesn’t mean they aren’t still interested in J.D. Martinez.

We still continue to feel that we have the opportunity to add someone else to our club from an offensive perspective that won’t be a first baseman. But we feel we have a DH — that between Hanley and if I could find someone else — [and] outfield spots that would give us plenty of at-bats and opportunities for somebody to contribute in a full-time fashion.Dave Dombrowski said.

The Indians have a hole at first base since Carlos Santana signed with the Phillies, but Terry Francona didn’t sound too convinced when asked about moving Jason Kipnis to first base.

Now that the Indians have lost Carlos Santana, why can’t they move Jason Kipnis to first base? He’s left-handed, which I understand is preferred for first base and I think he could be an average defensive player. He’s a fan favorite and I’ve seen way too many fan favorites leave over my lifetime.Jeffrey Hersh, Conway, S.C.

The Indians owe Kipnis just over $30 million for the next two years. That includes a $2.5 million buyout on his club option for 2020.

Francis Martes will start the season in the Astros’ bullpen or as part of the rotation down at Triple-A, depending on how many more relievers they add by spring. He only made eight starts at the Triple-A level before being promoted last June. He had a 5.80 ERA with 69 strikeouts and 31 walks over 54 ⅓ innings, (four starts and 28 relief appearances)

Ian Kinsler waived his limited no-trade clause to accept a deal to the Angels last week, partially because Justin Upton loves being an Angel, and partially because the Angels won the fight for Shohei Ohtani

Justin loved his time there so far, and I put a lot of trust in his opinion, It obviously made me real interested in the Angels.Ian Kinsler

On Friday, the Angels signed  Zack Cozart to a three-year contract worth $38 million. They plan to play him at third base, where his defensive acumen should supply the club with one of baseball’s best infields.

The Twins are showing serious interest in Yu Darvish and it makes sense because they need a reliable starter at the top of their rotation and they proved last season that they can contend in the American League Central. It is the perfect time while the Tigers, Indians and White Sox all seem to be rebuilding.

The Cardinals organization, as well as Cardinals fans, prove once again how classy they are by accepting a trade that sent Stephen Piscotty to Oakland where his mother was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Sometimes there are things more important than baseball,This opportunity here is a great combination of family and baseball. I think it’s really the best thing for myself and my family. A lot of good is going to come out of it. It’s been a huge outpouring of support. … It’s really humbling and cool to see,” he said. “Our family feels so loved at a tough time.Stephen Piscotty

Mariners manager Jerry Dipoto has made 65 deals involving more than 125 players in the 26½ months since he became the Mariners’ general manager and what may seem like all those moves did nothing to bolster the Mariner’s chances of making the playoffs, they probably did.

The Mariners are now the second youngest team in baseball, they own only three pending free agents and the team’s WAR has increased from 11 to 21 under Dipoto. All this while holding on to core players like Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager.
