Baseball Chatter 08/28

I am not a huge Fantasy Football fan, but I play in a couple of leagues each season and I don’t spend 12 weeks getting ready to draft. Why should I when I only need a couple of days? One thing I know for sure:

There is a very real shortage of elite Running backs while the number of decent Wide Receivers available late in drafts is plentiful. If you go into your draft with only that and an updated set of depth charts, you are ahead of the game.

Addison Russell (SS-CHC) is back again and has hit two homers in the past two games. Won’t play everyday so this is NOT a set it and forget it type player. Seriously, he needs a babysitter.

J.D. Davis (SS-NYM) is a much more reliable grab than Russell if you need a middle infielder.

Jose Urena (P-MIA) is about ready to return from injury, but rumor has it he will be the closer when he does. That is according to Craig Mish. Thanks Craig.

Jackie Bradley Jr. (OF-BOS) is not hitting for average, but he is hitting with mucho power lately. Yesterday he hit one 473 feet, and it currently sits as the longest hit for a Red Sox hitter since Statcast started keeping track.

Yu Darvish (SP-CHC)Last night he gave the first free pass in the last 142 batters faced.

Holy Smokes Batman, Franmil Reyes (OF-CLE) is hitting again. He must be finally settling into his new home and teammates. Franmil is going to make his way on to as many of my Fantasy teams as possible in 2020

Byron Buxton (OF-MIN) is hurt again, just when you thought it was safe…

Sam Hilliard (COL-OF) was called up and could be of offensive help – the chances he sees enough at-bats is about 50/50. Before getting called up, he had 35 homers and 22 steals. He also eclipsed 100 in both runs and RBI. Does it really matter then, that he strikes out waaaaaaaaay too much?

Joc Pederson (OF/1B-LAD) is hitting again so if someone dropped him in your league when he crapped out a while back, grab him and play him against any and all RHP

Logan Webb (SF-SP) will face the Padres at home Friday. His ground-ball rate was 60% in the minors this season, but his home ballpark is a treat for pitchers anyway. His slider and fastball are his best offering at this time but he is working on his changeup. He should not be on much of an innings limit the rest of the way.

Miguel Sano (3B-MIN) has hit six homers this week. Believe it. Also, believe in his 37% strikeout really cares about that at this point, I mean, a guy can strike out 50% of the time but if he crushes it the other 50% of the time…

Players Lost to Injury

David Peralta (AZ-OF) will have season-ending shoulder surgery. It was fun while it lasted.

Hunter Pence (TEX-OF) back on the injured list, this time with a lower back strain

Niko Goodrum (OF-DET) out with an abductor strain. Look to Colin Moran to replace him

Jose Ramirez (3B-CLE) had surgery on his hand and the Indians still claim he could make it back during the playoffs. Good luck with all that.

Players to Return From Injury

Brandon Nimmo (SS/OF-NYM) played a full game at Triple-A yesterday and is all set to participate for five innings tonight before he gets re-evaluated by the Mets medical staff.

Dansby Swanson (SS-ATL) will see most the playing time at shortstop in Atlanta upon his return. Bring it.

David Price (SP-BOS) is expected to return to the mound this weekend against the Angels.

Tyler O’Neill (OF-STL) has hit in each of five rehab games, is that not good enough to get called back to the majors? What is the holdup? Maybe it is the fact that Tommy Edman is hitting like a crazy man right now.

Jose Martinez (OF-STL) is hitting well in rehab. We already know he hits well. If you have a spot in a league that allows daily moves, grad Martinez and start babysitting. All about that base..ball.
