The Red Sox and Orioles are pissed off at each other after Manny Machado slid feet first into Dustin Pedroia at second base on Friday night. Pedroia limped off the field, and wasn’t in the lineup yesterday and today
In Machado’s defense, He did reach out to Pedroia after the game to apologize via text message. Also, why would Machado try to catch Pedroia if he intended to plow into him?
Reporter: Can you tell me what you said in response to Manny’s Text?Pedroia: Do you want me to add you to the text? This isn’t a group chat, man. I just said thanks for reaching out. That’s it. I don’t have an issue with anything. My job is to play baseball and win. This isn’t seventh grade, man. I just play baseball. That’s it. I care about our guys. I don’t care about anybody else. We just play the game.
Jeez Peetie…
The bad blood between the two clubs continued on into today..
Fascinating exchange captured by MASN between Machado and Pedroia. Dustin clearly saying “It wasn’t me. I know that and you know that.” pic.twitter.com/oqdt827ER9

Pedroia: “That’s not how you do that. I’m sorry to him and his team. I love Manny Machado. That’s a mishandled situation.”

The End
The Mariners designated Leonys Martin for assignment today since he has no more options left and his batting stats look like:
Bryce Harper vs. left-handed pitchers
Jerad Eickhoff is getting the worst run support in Phillies history. In 42 starts since August 2015, Eickhoff has allowed more than three runs only six times.
Trey Mancini has hit eight homers in his first 17 major league games, which ties him with Trevor Story and Carlos Delgado for the major league record.
Kenta Maeda gave up four homers last night and now has an ERA of 8.05 over four starts. He has yet to make it past the fifth inning. It seems obvious that hitters have started to figure him out:
- First 16 major league Starts 2.82 ERA — 1.14 WHIP
- 23 starts since — 5.11 ERA and 1.34 WHIP
Dave Roberts suggested Kenta Maeda could be skipped — or something like that — in order to help him get back on track.

Roberts believes Maeda is trying too hard to generate velocity on his fastball. That translates to misplaced location of the pitch.

The Mariners new outfield has Guillermo Heredia in left field, Jarrod Dyson in center and Mitch Haniger in right. Heredia is not going to turn heads with his power or speed, but his plate discipline is top notch and anything is an upgrade if you were still rolling with Martin in your lineup.
Signed at the end of February 2016 to a $500,000 bonus after defecting from Cuba the previous year, he was excellent at both Seattle’s Double- and Triple-A affiliates before earning a 100-plus plate appearances in the majors. At every level, he exhibited the ability to control the strike zone, not only making contact at elite levels but also producing what would have been a top-10 out-of-zone swing rate had he qualified. That, combined with his outfield defense, hint at a slightly above-average overall profile.
A crowded Mariners outfield will prevent him from earning a full-time role in the near future. The talent is present nonetheless. Carson Cistulli at Fangraphs
Seattle also called up Dan Vogelbach to share time with Danny Valencia at first base. They sent Chase De Jong down to Triple-A Tacoma and recalled reliever Chris Heston.
Team News
The Brewers in the first inning: .325 AVG, 17 R, 9 Dbl, 5 HR, 12 BB
Twelve of the Phillies 17 games so far have been within two runs
The Angels have eight pitchers on the disabled list after nineteen games.
The Dodgers have lost all 11 games when a starting pitcher not named Clayton Kershaw or Brandon McCarthy has been on the mound. Those starters have averaged less than five innings per start with a combined 6.22 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP.
The Cubs starters are averaging 5 ⅔ innings, which explains why only three teams have less quality starts than they do
Cubs First 17 Games:
- 2016 — 2.21 ERA — 15 Quality Starts
- 2017–4.00 ERA — 6 Quality Starts
Pirates pitchers have the most unearned runs in baseball, which says something about their defense. Something bad.
