Baseball Chatter 01/05

Free-agent righty Jason Hammel has drawn at least some interest from the Yankees,

While the Marlins claim they are inclined to let Justin Bour face more lefties, his minimal experience against them has not gone well. Miami might be interested in Jeff Francouer

The Athletics have expressed some interest in Mark Trumbo. Oakland played a notable role in driving the market for Edwin Encarnacion, offering him a high-AAV, short-term deal before he landed with the Indians.

Despite Aaron Nola’s poor end to the season, which was likely caused at least in part to injury, he might be the Phillies ace in 2017.

Vincent Velasquez also dazzled before getting shut down, but according to cFIP, he should be a solid contributor. So too should Jerad Eickhoff, who has demonstrated that he can eat innings and offer good, mid-rotation quality.

The question marks in Philly will revolve around Jeremy Hellickson and Clay Buchholz.

Cheslor Cuthbert is out of minor league options and might not have a better path to regular playing time than the team’s DH slot, which could give him the inside track. Kansas City will also use its DH slot to rest Mike Moustakas, who is returning from an ACL tear.

If a trade partner is to be found for lefty Jose Quintana, the White Sox hope to complete the deal prior to the start of Spring Training

Expect the Pirates to be in the deal with Todd Frazier heading to Pittsburgh to play third base for Jung Ho Kang

Though team officials have said rookie Trey Mancini could be the everyday designated hitter, they’re also skeptical of evaluating players exclusively off September performance in the majors. That means an everyday designated hitter could be on the shopping list as well.
