If the Cards keep playing this way, Oh will likely be on the mound for moments that’ll be photographed, for newspaper pages that’ll be framed. But for those moments to happen, it will likely mean that Trevor Rosenthal did his job. Years ago, someone decided that the save was a more-important accomplishment than extinguishing the highest-leverage situation of a game. And sometimes, that situation is with key hitters up in an inning that’s not the ninth. Benjamin Hochman St. Louis Post-DispatchTrevor Rosenthal is emerging as Cards EFFECTOR.
- His fastball velocity is averaging 99.1 mph, second only to the original effector, Aroldis Chapman, who is throwing 99.3 mph.
- Rosenthal made his 12th appearance when he entered the game in the eighth after the Cubbies scored a pair of runs in the seventh making the score 5-3. It took him 11 pitches to take out three batters. He struck out Tommy La Stella on an 89.1 mph change-up.
- The Cardinals are 12-2 when Rosenthal enters the game
It is effortless and it’s in the zone, and it’s obviously — it just looks different. I think it’s sneaky and it jumps on guys, and he’s got some good downhill plane right now. He’s in a real nice spot, and then you never know when he’s going to pull out the change-up like he did today.Mike Matheny on Rosenthal

We have conversations, Roger (McDowell) and Alan (Mills), and then we sit down about an hour before the game and go over the bullpen, Didn’t like it, didn’t like the feedback we were getting.Buck Showalter on O'Day

Garrett Richards is aiming for a return to major-league action in August
Looking at the schedule right now, I think that’s realistic, I think that’s all going to depend on when I start throwing again. But with the past cases, this was like a one-time thing for these guys. So I’m hopeful on that, too, that this might just be a fluke thing and I just continue on.
