But for those moments to happen, it will likely mean that Trevor Rosenthal did his job. Years ago, someone decided that the save was a more-important accomplishment than extinguishing the highest-leverage situation of a game. Trevor Rosenthal is emerging as Cards EFFECTOR.

  • His fastball velocity is averaging 99.1 mph, second only to the original effector, Aroldis Chapman, who is throwing 99.3 mph.
  • Rosenthal made his 12th appearance when he entered the game in the eighth after the Cubbies scored a pair of runs in the seventh making the score 5-3. It took him 11 pitches to take out three batters. He struck out Tommy La Stella on an 89.1 mph change-up.

Tyson Ross, who is recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome, threw 45 pitches over three innings in a rehab start. He allowed one earned run on three hits.

Jeurys Familia can resume throwing in about six weeks

Adrian Beltre took batting practice and fielded groundballs at third base Saturday, and the Rangers hope he can return before the end of May

Garrett Richards is aiming for a return to major-league action in August

Looking at the schedule right now, I think that’s realistic, I think that’s all going to depend on when I start throwing again. But with the past cases, this was like a one-time thing for these guys. So I’m hopeful on that, too, that this might just be a fluke thing and I just continue on.

Corey Kluber has resumed throwing, but there is still no timetable for his return.
