Atlanta Braves: Julio Teherán Poised for a Bounce Back Year?

Julio Teherán‘s effectiveness has steadily fallen over the course of his 8-year career. He has had an ERA above 3.90 for three of the past four years.  This is due in part to his wavering control. Last season he had an 11.6 percent walk rate, which was worst in the MLB. He also has experienced a downward trend in his fastball velocity over the entirety of his career

Teherán appears to have added about ten pounds of muscle this off-season. He is also making some changes to his game this spring. He has only pitched from the stretch, and his velocity has been back up in the 91-92 mph range.

Julio’s spring training numbers have been fantastic. He currently has a 3.00 ERA through 12 innings pitched. He has 16 strikeouts, good for an immaculate 12.0 strikeouts per 9 innings. He only has one walk this spring, along with a WHIP of 0.92. Of course the sample size is small, but these are all good signs.

It seems Teherán is in line to be the opening day starter for the sixth straight year.

It’s no sure thing, but maybe the two-time all star can return to his once-impressive form this season.
