The Mets and Mariners have officially completed their trade of Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz for Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak, Gerson Bautista, Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn along with $20 million in cash.
Seattle is taking all of Bruce’s and all of Swarzak’s money, so the Mets are getting about $57 million worth of money total. Leaving them on the hook for 62 mil for 5 years of Cano.
My take: A lot of people are going to complain that Cano is 36 but the guy still rakes. Hit over .300 when he came back from suspension last year. Edwin Diaz is a light out closer with 15.3 k/9 average and under team friendly control for 3+ years. Everyone is hyping up Kelenic but let’s remember he’s only 19 years old and the Mets aren’t a team that have produced great position players over the last 30 years. He could be another Fernando Martinez/Alex Escobar/Lastings Milledge.
This trade proves that the Mets are trying to win in the next 2/3 years while they have their pitchers under team control and it’s about time the Mets are on the back page. All I know is with Brodie Van Wagenen’s outside the box thinking and his aggressiveness what will he have in store next for the Amazin’s??
